Bike & Build welcomes all housing nonprofits and service organizations to submit a grant application for consideration. Our program aims to mobilize young adults to affect the affordable housing cause — we welcome applications for established programs, non-traditional projects, and innovative new ideas.
Bike & Build requires that grant applications meet the following criteria:
The application period for 2016 is closed. Applicants will be notified in October if they are funded. Check back in April 2017 for the next grant competition. Until then, you can see 2016’s application instructions.
Our riders raised this money, so they should be the ones who decide how it’s spent, right?
What projects has Bike & Build funded through this program?
In 2015, Bike & Build distributed $358,000 to 94 organizations through our competitive grant program alone (not including the other three types of awards we make). These grantees cover a range of backgrounds and geographic areas.
What types of projects are eligible to receive grants?
Bike & Build welcomes all housing groups and service organizations to submit a grant application for consideration. Our program aims to mobilize young adults to affect the affordable housing cause — we welcome applications for established programs, as well as those for innovative and non-traditional projects.
Does my organization have to build with Bike & Build to be eligible to apply for a grant?
No, you do NOT need to sponsor a build to apply for a Bike & Build competitive grant. These grants are open to all affordable housing organizations.
Do you accept applications on a rolling basis?
We do not. Applications are available online each year from April to June. In 2016, applications were due on June 3. No exceptions are made for late applications. The 2017 application period will open up next April.

Is Bike & Build part of Habitat for Humanity or any other affordable housing program?
Bike & Build is not affiliated with Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, YouthBuild USA, or any other organization or association. As an independent 501(c)(3) organization, we volunteer with and grant to many different affordable housing nonprofits – all project agreements are entered into on per-occasion basis.
While the competitive grant program is the primary method through which Bike & Build donates the money it receives, we also empower our riders and hosts to support specific organizations directly.
All riders are able to designate one affordable housing organization of their choice to receive a $500 unrestricted grant.
These contributions, typically $100, are made to local housing organizations as designated by the community centers, churches, schools and other organizations that host our trips.
Bike & Build occasionally works with targeted affordable housing groups for various reasons. In these cases, a portion of our trips’ proceeds are reserved for these groups.
