Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

IN 5 YEARS, BIKE & BUILD WILL BE

Continuing to make significant strides for our Riders, Trip Leaders, Staff and Board to be increasingly more parallel to the communities we serve.

Proactively utilizing a Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Policy that is included and infused throughout the organization in order to remove barriers, increase our understanding better enabling us to support new partnerships

Achieving organizational objectives for diversification, inclusion and equity, to include by race, gender, sexuality, geography and socioeconomic identity.

BECAUSE

The SERVICE that we offer needs to have EQUAL value to the PEOPLE we SERVE. Respecting the diverse communities we serve, diversifying B&B helps us better understand and meet the needs of those we serve; it supports recruitment; increases the diversity of perspectives; and helps us create trust for partnerships with new organizations. Diversity, inclusion and equity permeate throughout everything we do, and are vital for the long-term sustainability of our organization in fundraising, recruitment, relevance and affordable housing.

Goals

  • DE&I needs to be infused throughout everything we do.
  • Define our specific position / policy for DE&I
  • Identify barriers keeping diverse / target audiences from participating
  • Cultivate intentional outreach and partnerships
  • Grow our internal expertise in this area
  • Actively recruit along Bike & Build routes
  • There is a sense our hosts are not racially diverse.  If this is a priority, can we do more to stay with racially diverse hosts
  • If we want to be more representative of the communities we serve, then we need to be more concerned about diversifying in terms of backgrounds vs. race

OPERATIONS

Following clearly defined Strategic and Annual Plans.

Fully confident with our proven record for the sustainability of all aspects of our organization.

Leveraging non-rider funding to cover 100% of overhead costs.

Governed and managed by a diverse team, with B&B values reflected across our operations.

BECAUSE

It is vital to maintain the sustainability of the organization so Bike & Build can continue to achieve our mission and impact the lives of young adults for generations to come.

Goals

  • Finalize our Strategic plan
  • Utilize the Risk Assessment for ongoing evaluations of trips, programs and operations.
  • Activate an approach for Governance, Board and Staff succession
  • Establish diverse revenues for our financial sustainability
  • Follow well defined branding & communications strategies
  • Proactively manage and use our data of alumni, partners, families and donors, i.e. Integrate and utilize a new/expanded CRM system

Respected as a leader throughout the affordable housing community for our contributions and impact.

Serving as a knowledge bank of Affordable Housing resources for our riders, leaders, and alumni community.

Using diverse approaches to impact Affordable Housing.

Responsive to the interests of riders (focus on empowerment).

BECAUSE

These programs are integral to achieving our mission, specifically in replicating the enthusiasm and culture of empowerment present in Bike & Build.

Goals

  • Define the elements of Bike & Build that foster a life changing growth experience
  • Fill trips to capacity
  • Document an annual review process
  • Consider New Programming Options (Achieving the Mission must be top priority)
  • Become more intentional with empowerment / development / leader development
  • Better tell our story about our programs, their impact and our reach

AFFORDABLE HOUSING & CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Respected as a leader throughout the affordable housing community for our contributions and impact.

Serving as a knowledge bank of Affordable Housing resources for our riders, leaders, and alumni community.

Using diverse approaches to impact Affordable Housing.

Providing the B&B experience to an increasing number of young adults.

Ensuring riders leave B&B well versed in the Affordable Housing cause and are empowered to remain civically engaged.

BECAUSE

We ultimately want to produce educated and engaged citizens who feel empowered to make social change.  (Note, there is less of a concern that we make a direct impact and more that we know HOW to support other individuals and organizations to make a direct impact.)

Goals

  • Better impact grant recipients, with our limited dollars
  • Better educate, prepare and empower our Riders
  • Diversify build partners
  • Engage Alumni
  • Grow our internal expertise in this area
  • Enhance our national connections
  • Use end-of-trip Rider Surveys to measure our impact
  • Better tell our story about our impact and alumni engagement

EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS (Alumni)

IN 5 YEARS, BIKE & BUILD WILL BE

Ensuring alumni continue to experience ongoing, meaningful connections with the B&B culture and overall engagement, regardless of these being facilitated by the organization or occurring organically.

Seeing Alumni population actively engaged with B&B and their communities serving as role models

Focused on maintaining the B&B culture and connection in order to improve recruitment.

An alumni base with a community-wide understanding of the vital importance to give back to the organization on an annual basis.

BECAUSE

Alumni empowerment and support will strengthen the organization at every level, while our alumni continue to be our future leaders. Engagement throughout our expanded community will help us continue the mission and maintain the culture of the organization.

Goals

  • Maximize success for the Every Rider Every Year campaign
  • Leverage alumni engagement to support B&B programs
  • Introduce new outreach opportunities/models to alumni
  • Monitor and use a cycle of communications
  • Tracking metrics around giving and engagement post trip
  • Better tell our story about our alumni
  • Leverage the Alumni Council and alumni groups within local cities / communities
  • Develop partner ride relations as a way for alumni to support the org
  • Serve as a catalyst to promote / encourage civic engagement with alumni
