Hi, I'm Paul "PJ" Ryan. I am 20 years old, and I am a Sophomore in Computer Science at Purdue University. When I am not buried in books on algorithms and the like, I can be found at Purdue's rock climbing wall. I fell in love with rock climbing after my senior year in high school, and I could not be happier. When I first came to Purdue, I joined the Purdue Outing Club, where I met many of my best friends, including Max Andreychak, a Bike & Build alumni, who inspired me to do this trip. I have been on many adventures through rock climbing. I have been to Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Alabama, West Virginia, New Mexico, and Nevada all because of climbing. These trips have left me with a yearning for adventure. In the past six months, I have also picked up swing dancing. I hope to travel a lot and meet many new and life-long friends through this as well. I love travelling and meeting new people, which I think makes Bike & Build a perfect fit for me.
During past summers, I have worked as a camp counselor at Camp Motorsport in Clover, Virginia. I have been attending summer camps all my life and always aspired to be a camp counselor because I looked up to them and saw them as some of the best examples of leadership in my life. As a counselor, I learned a lot about taking responsibility for a group and being a leader by example, both to the groups I was supervising and to my fellow staff. I learned a lot about connecting with people that I never would have learned otherwise. I have taken the lessons I learned as a camper and as a counselor and I have applied them to my life. I firmly believe that my experiences at camp have made me who I am today.
I chose to raise money for affordable housing because of my love for adventure coupled with past volunteer work. I was a member of the Blessed Trinity Catholic High School Habitat for Humanity chapter during my high school years, and I have completed a charity ride for the Lafayette/West Lafayette Habitat for Humanity chapter here at Purdue. I have seen how much of a difference one person can make in a family’s life, and I want others to experience the same thing. I am very excited for Bike & Build and I hope to bring this excitement with me across this beautiful country.
