My name is Rouella and I am 26 years old. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I moved to San Diego for college and while completing my Bachelors in Psychology, I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity (HFH). We did a few small build days but I was itching for more! So following school, I looked for more service-oriented opportunities and was fortunate to served in the Peace Corps as a Community Development Volunteer in a small town in Kyrgyzstan. I focused my efforts on youth development and community service projects. It was a great adventure being immersed in a completely different yet comforting culture! My experience in the Peace Corps reaffirmed my passion for education and youth. I firmly believe an educated and informed group of young people can do anything (like cycle cross country and educate others about housing issues!). So I went back to school and finished getting my Master's in International Educational Development at Columbia University. While in New York, I got involved with HFH in the city. We worked on build sites in Queens as well as disaster relief sites in Staten Island to alleviate the effects of Super Storm Sandy. There I learned I loved demolition projects!
I learned about Bike & Build from a colleague of mine. Although I am a novice at cycling, I've always dreamed about biking cross country. I am committed to pedal for affordable housing because securing a home now is extremely challenging. The market has driven the cost so high that it is nearly impossible for working class families to buy their own home. Additionally, I firmly believe that everyone should be given reasonable opportunities to a safe and peaceful living environment. It sets the foundation for a healthy, secured, and fulfilled life.
I love how Bike & Build empowers and inspires people! I feel very fortunate to be able to work with a great organization that is helping alleviate the problem. I am excited about the challenge we are embarking, the friendships I will establish, the growth we will experience, and most importantly, the opportunity to increase awareness and education about the issue of affordable housing. I cannot wait to see what lies ahead!
Thank you in advance for all of your support!
