Hey! My name is Rose Matthews, I'm 22, and from Boise, Idaho. I'm attending the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and studying Tropical Plant and Soil Science. I love hiking, camping, wilderness, swimming, watching sports, going to the beach, and my three bicycles, of course!
My interests in affordable housing have been influenced by disaster recovery, especially following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina and the work of the Red Cross and other independent organizations who lead rebuilding efforts. While there are many causes of homelessness, with some temporary and uncontrollable such as natural disasters, other reasons like poverty should be unacceptable. I think affordable housing should be attainable for everyone so I'm proud to support Bike and Build's efforts.
I've seen Bike and Build riders and their van going through Boise the past two summers and wanted to experience the cross-country cycle adventure too. My Dad and I have dreamed of biking across Canada on the Trans-Can highway after seeing cyclists camping and riding through Ontario. This experience will bring me a step closer to that goal. I've lived in Maryland, Michigan, and Idaho so I've explored the East Coast, Midwest and Northwest and have been to 28 states. With this trip I will be able to check off 9 new states! I'm excited to experience The South for the first time, for New Orleans, the world of Texas, the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and the places I don't even know to look forward to. I'm also excited for eating lots of ice cream, setting personal records of miles biked with no hands, learning construction, and being able to BUILD A HOUSE!
I'm stoked to ride across America because it's not something everyone can do, wants to do, or is given the opportunity to do. It is a real accomplishment to bike 4000+ miles. I want to see the country in way I wouldn't by just road tripping.
