Hello! I'm Alan Guagliardo (Why-are-dough) and I am a 22 year old Tampa native. I attend the University of South Florida and I graduate in December 2013 with my undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering and Masters degree in Engineering Management. I am a member of the USF Cycling Team and a mentor in the Institute of Industrial Engineers USF chapter. I love to ride my bike and swing dance. I currently teach lindy hop at the weekly swing dance in Tampa and attend national workshop events in order to further my dance skills.
I first heard about Bike & Build when I stumbled upon a 2012 rider's blog through Reddit and I immediately knew that I wanted to have a Bike & Build Summer. She described the journey including the amazing sights, build days, and endless uphill roads and every word reassured the idea that I had to do it. In addition to the amazing journey, the affordable housing cause that it raises money and awareness for is a large issue in the United States. In Tampa the number of homeless people is extremely high, but panhandling laws restrict their visibility to the public. Something has to be done about the homeless in the very city I live in! Having somewhere to live is one of the most basic needs and is something we all can help provide if we give a little time. Having affordable housing allows families to be healthier, raise children in a more stable environment, and save for the future.
In the past I have participated in fundraising cycling events and volunteered to raise money for school organizations, but I have never done something as awesome as this adventure will be! I am excited to see countless sunrises on country highways and see how the landscape changes the closer we get to the Pacific. I am excited for the challenges I will face on the road and can't wait to see the smile on people's faces as we help build their new homes. But it is a little flat here in Tampa, so I am nervous about climbing those mountains!
