My name is Madalyn Cassis, but most people know me as Laini. I am 21 years old, a junior at Simmons College in Boston, and super excited about Bike & Build! Iím a double major in English and womenís studies, with a minor in sociology. I am originally from Millis, MA, which is a small town outside of Boston.

I first heard about Bike & Build from another student at Simmons College who had just completed her trip. It sounded really interesting, and now, few years later, Iím finally doing it! Iím really excited about the route I will be cycling: South Carolina to Santa Cruz, CA! I have not been to any of the states in this route, so every day will be a new experience. I am most nervous about biking through mountain ranges, but I know Iíll do my best!

I became involved with affordable housing efforts through participation with Alternative Spring Break: Simmons Builds. My freshman year, I was a member of the week-long trip to a Habitat for Humanity work-site in the Pittsburgh area. For my sophomore, I took on more responsibilities for Alternative Spring Break: Simmons Builds by becoming a co-leader. Simmons Builds is a unique ASB experience because it is student-led, and all the expenses are fund raised. This second trip was to another suburb outside of Pittsburgh. Through Alternative Spring Break: Simmons Builds, I gained so many inspiring experiences working towards affordable housing in the United States, and met folks who truly warmed my heart. I also learned what it means to fund raise for a service trip.

So, to put it simply: I love biking. What began as a fun activity in grade school, next became a hobby, and now will be an entire summer. These days, my riding is most frequently a means of transportation around Boston and Cambridge. However, I look forward to exploring the greater Boston area on longer rides this spring, as I log my 500 miles of training. Until then, I've been staying active as a member of the Simmons crew team.

Overall, my college experience thus far has done so much to prepare me for my summer on Bike & Build. My involvement with Alternative Spring Break: Simmons Builds taught me about fundraising while motivating me to work further on the issue of affordable housing. Joining the crew team has been a great way to physically prepare for a summer of riding. And of course, the entire Simmons community has been largely supportive with donations towards my fundraising goal!
