Hi, my name is Alex Bloom and I’m 23 years old. In 2010, I graduated from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University with a BFA in Graphic and Interactive Design.

Originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, proud home of the Reading Railroad and fine shoe fly pie, I now reside in Philadelphia, PA. I work there as an interactive designer at Bluecadet, a studio focused on multimedia storytelling, primarily for museums, universities, and nonprofits. In my free time I take photographs, design printed materials and websites for people and things I love, and contribute content to a collective website called thelastpeople.com.

I have been riding bicycles, specifically BMX, my entire life—but I started long distance road and track racing 5 years ago. During the hospitable months of the northeast, I split my time between the wooded dirt jumps, the road, and the local Trexlertown velodrome.

I became interested in the cause of affordable housing because I live in a city with extreme socio-economic tension, and I received a college education at the front lines of the increasingly gentrified neighborhood of North Philadelphia. In my subsequent travels to other cities and developing nations, I have realized that the problems facing my neighborhood and city were rampant across our country and worldwide.

I first heard about Bike & Build when I was racing for Temple University. We had a great camaraderie with the other Philadelphia teams, and a fellow rider from the University of Pennsylvania described the program. He told me “He was going to ride, across America, to raise money for affordable housing.” It sounded so much more fun and empowering than racing for a place on a list. I kept up with his journey, and I knew that I wanted to someday participate in Bike & Build.

Though my professional efforts as a designer are often focused on social causes and I try to donate work to organizations I believe in, I have very little volunteering experience, and am very excited to devote an extended period of time to a service I believe in.

I’m looking forward to sharing an amazing journey with fellow riders, and meeting some of the inspiring people across our country that are working to combat the affordable housing issues we face.
