Hi! I'm Cassi and I am 20 years old, and will be 21 in April. I am from Fairfax Virginia, currently living in Norfolk VA for college. I attend Old Dominion University and I am majoring in Audiology and minoring in Human Services. I am on the ODU rowing club, and have been part of the team for 3 years now and LOVE it.
I heard about Bike and build through a friend who did it in the 2011 trip through central US. He talked about all his adventures and how amazing the trip was so I felt like I would be missing out on an amazing opportunity if I didn't do it.
I chose to raise money for Affordable housing because I believe everyone deserves to have a place to call home, especially in America. I don't have a background in volunteering for affordable housing or building homes, but I have volunteered to help my community, help tutor under-privileged kids, be a camp counselor, work in offices that deal with hearing impaired people, I’ve helped in a women’s center, and food drives for the homeless.
In Northern Virginia it is very expensive to live and own a house and often I see and hear about my neighbors having their houses foreclosed or having no option but moving to a less expensive part of Virginia or the country to live. My goal is to help the people who work multiple jobs, care for their children, and on top of caring for a family try to afford their homes. it isn’t fair that those people have to give half of what they earn to keeping their homes, when their income should go towards their family’s well being.
I want to travel the world in my lifetime, yet I have always wanted to start with my home country. I feel there is no better way to see the country than biking across it. That way I can see the scenery change with each day, see how the towns differ as we pass through, and really see the country for what it is and not just defined destinations on a map. One of my many life goals is to backpack around New Zealand.. say "hey" to the hobbits haha. I am probably most nervous about going up mountains, since all I’ve ever done is bike up small hills. I am most excited for descending mountains, because I love going fast and feeling that sense of freedom mixed with a crazy amount of adrenaline. I am also pumped to meet my Bike and Build group and having an awesome adventure with them. And meet people along the way and learn how to build a house.. that will probably come in handy in my future. My two friends on my rowing club really inspired me to do Bike and Build. My one friend who is an alumni to Bike and Build talked about it a lot and sparked my other friends interest and then the more they talked about it the more I wanted to do it… so here I am, ready to take on the country and bike for affordable housing!
